Cummins Cake

Hello Everyone and happy Friday!
 
So, a few weeks ago was my boyfriend's birthday and he wanted me to make him a C shaped cake for his favorite diesel truck, Cummins.
 
Well, I took a shot at it and I guess you can say I tried. I sort of failed, but I did come up with some helpful tips for you all!
 
What you need:
  • Cake mix (I used lemon cake and 4 boxes)
  •  A large baking pan (I used a sheet cake pan-Sorry, don't know the measurements!)
  • Some type of filling (optional, I used lemon curd)
  • Frosting (I used whipped and I used between 3 and 4 containers)
  • Food Coloring (optional)
  • A Platter
  • Detailing tips (optional)
 
Step 1. Bake your cake and let cool. I only had 1 pan so I baked one and flipped it out onto a cookie sheet to cool while I made the other one.
 
Step 2. I omitted this step, but I think it would be the best way to go. Put your cake either in the freezer or fridge for at least a few hours so it "sets"
 
Step 3. Cut out your C shape. You can draw a "stencil" on some paper and cut it out, but I free handed it.
 
Step 4. Place your first C on top of the other sheet cake to use as a stencil. I broke mine into pieces so that it was easier to move.
 

**Optional: Before crumb coating, fill the bottom layer. I totally forgot to do this step on the bottom. So the tutorial for how to do this is below**

Step 5. Place your frst C down and "crumb coat" it. This is basically a thin layer of frosting that is meant to seal in the crumbs. Mine didn't work all that well, but if you freeze the cake beforehand, it should work much better.

Step 6. Place your second C on top of the first.  

Now, here's where your options come in. My boyfriend wanted the cake filled. As I mentioned above, I forgot to fill the bottom layer. Now if you've filled cupcakes before, this is similar, but a bit more difficult. To fill your cake, carefully cut out sections. Make sure they don't come too close to the edge or else your cake essentially starts to melt (like mine). Once you Make your cuts, carefully pull the pieces out. I basically cut mine in half so I could grab them more easily. Then, cut the excess cake off the bottom of those pieces. Fill the holes as shown below:



Then, place your top back on!

Step 7. Now, carefully crumb coat your top layer.


 
Step 8. After coating your top layer, add a layer of your colored frosting. ( for me, this is where things started falling apart. Literally.)

 
Step 9. Use a detailing tip or pouch to write on the cake. Tommy wanted the word "Cummins" along with some smoke stacks.


Hopefully it turns out a bit better for you all if you try it! Mine fell apart about 5 minutes after I took the picture, but it still tasted good!
